The End of an Era

I was wandering around in the rain today, because that’s the kind of idiot I am, when I arrived at The Atlas Barber School on Third Avenue on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Well, I just told a lie. I arrived at what used to be The Atlas Barber School. It’s gone! A sign, which wasn’t even hung in the window but rather was placed (or maybe fell) on top of a plastic bucket of some sort, stated “Thank you for your patronage”.  No forwarding address, so to speak. No announcement of any kind indicating they would be reopening anywhere. Just gone and Thanks for the patronage. I had been getting my hair cut there (at $5 a cut no less) for twelve years, and now they’re gone. Where do regular people go to get their hair cut? I had to ask myself. I now wish I had taken a picture of the place, but it was raining and it was sad… I did find a nearby barber shop and got a decent cut (for quite a bit more than $5 of course) but I don’t think the sadness wave has really even crashed for me yet. I never even got to say goodbye. I was going to post a picture I found online, since I didn’t get to take one myself, but I can’t even find one online. Just damn sad! But here’s a little background. Or maybe it reads like an obit now: http://nymag.com/listings/beauty/atlas-barber-school/
